Emilia Galotti and Maria Magdalena are both tragic heroines in German literature, created by playwrights of the Enlightenment era. Both characters face oppression and manipulation by powerful men, leading to their ultimate downfall. However, Emilia Galotti, created by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, is a virtuous and innocent young woman who is ultimately killed by her own father to protect the family's honor, while Maria Magdalena, created by Friedrich Schiller, is a more complex character who is driven to madness and suicide after being abandoned by her lover. Despite their differences, both characters serve as symbols of the societal constraints placed on women during their respective time periods. **
